Purifying a compound by HPLC. All compounds are extensively characterised before testing |
The chemistry group’s principal objective is to design and synthesise novel small molecule organic compounds for testing in biological and physiochemical assays, working towards the identification of novel bioactive molecules as preclinical development candidates for cancer.
The team prepares final test compounds as well as larger scale intermediates and reference standards. All modern techniques of organic synthesis are employed including advanced metal-mediated transformations such as palladium coupling reactions and ruthenium catalysed processes. In addition modern analytical tools are used for structure determination of complex molecules arising from chemical reactions, including intermediates and impurities, as well as the purification of final products.

| Organic synthesis in action! |
Synthesis, whether on the small milligram or the large kilogram scale, is at the heart of drug discovery and as such will continue to play a key role in S*BIO's research and development projects.
