Dr. Jan-Anders Karlsson - CEO & Board Member

Dr. Jan-Anders Karlsson took over the helm as the company’s CEO from January 2005. He has extensive experience in the pharmaceutical industry, with many proven successes in the drug discovery area. Dr. Karlsson will combine his exceptional technical knowledge with his strong business acumen and ability to build entrepreneurial drug discovery cultures, to help S*BIO achieve its vision of becoming an internationally competitive drug discovery and development company. Dr Karlsson is also a member of S*BIO's Board of Directors.

Prior to joining S*BIO, Dr. Karlsson was the Executive Vice President, Global Research of Bayer Pharma, where he was a member of the Executive Management Committee and responsible for the company’s global drug discovery organisation.




Dr Joy Zhu - Senior Vice President, Global Clinical Development

Dr Zhu leads S*BIO’s oncology clinical research group and is responsible for spearheading the company’s clinical development strategies and activities, from Phase I to Phase IV trials. She has extensive experience in drug development, in particular in planning and conducting all phases of pharmaceutical clinical studies around the world. Prior to S*BIO, Dr Zhu was the Senior Medical Director, Scios (now J&J), where she handled oncology clinical development, pre-IND planning and supervision of all clinical data. She has also held leadership positions at AMGEN, Sugen (now Pfizer) and Novartis, where she was instrumental in building drug development strategies.




Dr. Stephen Keith Rhind – Senior Vice President, Corporate Development

Dr Rhind heads the corporate development activities at S*BIO. Dr Rhind has 22 years experience working for several biotech companies and over 13 years business development experience in a variety of roles including supporting two UK IPO’s, one US IPO, in-licensing, out-licensing, sales and marketing and participating in M&A activities. Prior to joining S*BIO, Dr Rhind built the initial sales and marketing team which created an international client base for Pharmagene Laboratories Limited. He helped to conclude significant out-licensing deals with a number of companies including GSK and Enzon Pharmaceuticals and has concluded numerous in-licensing deals for products and technologies from a variety of US biotechnology companies in addition to prestigious US and UK universities and institutions.




Dr Brian Dymock - Head, Chemistry

Dr Dymock leads S*BIO's Chemistry research group and brings a diversity of experience to S*BIO. He has worked within the Pharma, Biotech and Discovery Services sectors of the industry, converting project ideas and leads into clinical candidates. Prior to joining S*BIO, he has worked for Evotec UK, a leading supplier of drug discovery services, where he led Medicinal Chemistry programmes targeting both enzymes and receptors primarily in CNS and inflammatory diseases. He has also gained extensive experience through oncology projects with Vernalis, viral disease research working in Hepatitis C and HIV with Roche and cholesterol biosynthesis and thrombin inhibitors with Glaxo.




Dr Jeanette Wood - Head , Biology

Dr Wood joins S*BIO, heading the biology research groups and bringing on board strong scientific and drug discovery leadership. Prior to joining S*BIO, she was a member of the Novartis Oncology Research Management Team based in Basel, Switzerland. She has extensive experience in all aspects of drug discovery, from target validation, compound screening, compound profiling, biomarker development through to support of clinical trials. In Ciba-Geigy and Novartis she successfully led various drug discovery teams and played a major role in the discovery and profiling of several marketed drugs and compounds in the Novartis development portfolio. These include the novel renin inhibitor Aliskiren (RasilezR), which was recently filed for registration for the treatment of hypertension and the anti-angiogenic tyrosine kinase inhibitor, PTK787, which is currently in Phase III trials for colorectal cancer.

Dr Wood also has experience in multiple disease areas including cancer, cardiovascular, ocular and inflammatory diseases. She has been awarded several prizes for her scientific and drug discovery excellence, is author of numerous patents and publications, and her successes were described in the July 05 issue of Fortune magazine.


Dr. Kantharaj Ethirajulu - Head, Preclinical Development

Dr Kantharaj heads S*BIO's preclinical development group. Prior to joining S*BIO, he has worked with Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research and Development, Belgium as team leader, ADME/Tox department and AstraZeneca R&D in India as Head of DMPK and Bioanalytical Chemistry. He has played crucial role in the drug discovery programs in guidance and decision making with respect to the optimisation of drug metabolism and pharmacokinetic properties of the lead compounds and selection of drug candidates for further development. He was in the steering committee of global networking DMPK working groups at both AstraZeneca and JNJPRD. He is also serving as Adjunct Associate Professor at Department of Chemical & Biological Sciences, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.
